Historical Background of MMA

Mixed martial arts or MMA is now attaining the popularity and interest of people in a wider manner; however, this special fighting sport has passed a long path to establish itself as a popular, healthy and entertaining discipline.

MMA

The most basic style of MMA was introduced in 1880s when the world heavyweight boxing champion fought against Greco-Roman wrestling champion to introduce the No Holds Barred Fighting (NHB Fighting). The wrestling champion won that match and since then, MMA techniques have been changed a lot. Gradually, more fighting skills including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Smabo, Muay Thai and other martial arts of Indian and Chinese origin were added in the MMA techniques during late 1800’s and early to mid 1900s.

Many popular figures, including Bruce Lee advocated the idea of MMA.

According to Dana White, Bruce Lee can be considered as the father of MMA.While the idea of mixed martial arts is very old, there was no organizational structure to provide a platform for MMA competitions. In 1990s, UFC tournaments were introduced in the USA that offered the required impetus for MMA to become a popular sport.

Traditional Muay Thai

Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand, where it was originated and was developed during the reign of Tiger King.

That ruler had a considerable command over MMA fighting skills. The traditional name of this fighting sport which is also applicable as a technique of self-defense is, “art of eight limbs.” This martial art got this name because it involves usage of hands, elbows, feet and knees. Thus, this martial art form involves all eight important point of contact which makes it very effective and dangerous art of self defense.

During the old ages, Muay Thaiexperts used to wear horse hairs or hemp wires (ropes) on forearms to protect the fighter against his adversaries.

In addition, these strips of horse hair or hemp ropes were also used to inflict the opponents severely. Later on, in modern times, conventional boxing gloves took place of strips of horsehairs or hemp ropes. Before 1932, groin kicks were legal and allowed and hence opponents used to wear groin guards made of bark of trees or seashells. The earliest beginnings of the arts of self-defence should be similar, especially amongst Asian countries, which emphasize fighting with all parts of the body such as throwing, thumping, breaking, punching, beating, knocking, thrusting and kicking, and so on.

It is believed that Muay Thai started by using all parts of the body for self-defence and for settling arguments, as well as for defending the country during the various wars.

Muay Thai was practised by the soldiers of the army in battle with neighbouring countries, in order to keep enemies from reaching them with weapons, such as swords, in combat at close-quarters. The Thais used the arts of Muay Thai, especially dtae and teep, to keep their opponents at a distance, as well as to keep them off balance so that they would surrender more easily.

Mixed Martial Arts Gloves

In 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) committee in the US made it compulsory for Mixed Martial Arts experts, trainers and competitors to use Mixed Martial Arts gloves and soon all Mixed Martial Arts enthusiasts started using proper gloves for learning, practicing and competing with their opponents.

These gloves work to protect the fighters from causing injuries to their fingers, wrists and hands while punching and striking against their opponents and these gloves also help a Mixed Martial Arts fighter to defend himself against powerful blows of their opponent.

The Mixed Martial Arts gloves are specifically designed with open fingers and open palm to provide maximum freedom for combatants to use their hands properly without any restrictions.

In market, one can attain four types of Mixed Martial Arts gloves namely; bag, fight, sparring, and hybrid gloves.

Sparring gloves are often used by trainees while practicing various techniques of Mixed Martial Arts. Bag gloves are usable for those who are practicing to strike and beat by striking pads. Bag gloves are heavily padded and they also include a wrist support and a grip bar to help the practitioner.

These gloves are meant for practicing while striking pads and they should not be used for sparring practices and for actual fighting competition. Fighting gloves are very less padded and they are lighter and one should not use them for sparring or for striking pads as they are meant for actual competitive fighting sequences.

An Mixed Martial Arts hybrid glove is one that can be used for all the three purposes.

However, expert Mixed Martial Arts specialists suggest that a trainee should opt for all three different sets of gloves to be used for different purposes.

Judo: Modern Martial Arts

Judo is a modern martial art, combat sport and Olympic sport created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano.

Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw or take down one’s opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one’s opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a strangle hold or choke.

Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defences are a part of Judo, but only in pre-arranged forms (kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice (randori).

The philosophy and subsequent pedagogy developed for judo became the model for other modern Japanese martial arts that developed from koryū. The worldwide spread of Judo has led to the development of a number of offshoots such as Sambo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Judo practitioners are called judoka.

Judo is many things to different people. It is a fun sport, an art, a discipline, a recreational or social activity, a fitness program, a means of self-defense or combat, and a way of life. It is all of these and more.

Judo comes to us from the fighting system of feudal Japan.Founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano, Judo is a refinement of the ancient martial art of Jujutsu.

Dr. Kano, President of the University of Education, Tokyo, studied these ancient forms and integrated what he considered to be the best of their techniques into what is now the modern sport of Judo.

Judo was introduced into the Olympic Games in 1964 and is practiced by millions of people throughout the world today. People practice Judo to excel in competition, to stay in shape, to develop self-confidence, and for many other reasons. But most of all, people do Judo just for the fun of it.
